Application of tilt sensors and accelerometers in offshore wind power generation equipment

We know that energy issues have increasingly become a top priority that restricts social development in various countries. To this end, governments around the world have begun to continuously seek new energy sources and develop renewable energy. Among these, wind power generation, especially offshore wind power generation, has become a hot investment area. In the construction of wind power generation equipment, the application of safety monitoring technologies such as acceleration sensors, current sensors, and tilt sensors is not uncommon.

According to foreign media reports, after halting the world's most expensive nuclear power project not long ago, on August 16, the UK approved the construction of the world's largest offshore wind farm. It is reported that this wind farm is planned to be built in the waters near Yorkshire, including up to 300 large offshore wind turbines. The project is planned to have a generating capacity of 1,800 megawatts, which is expected to provide low-carbon electricity to about 1.8 million households in the UK.

        Acceleration sensor

Among the various facilities used for wind power generation, wind turbines are the key equipment that converts wind energy into electrical energy. In simple terms, the principle is that wind energy is converted into electrical energy after passing through the rotor, main shaft, gearbox, and generator. Among these components, the blades of the wind turbine are particularly susceptible to vibration due to wind loads, which can lead to structural damage to the wind turbine in severe cases.

In addition, during the operation of wind turbines, various factors can cause significant vibrations in the nacelle in all directions, which can endanger the normal operation of the wind turbine. At this time, it is necessary to use acceleration sensors to monitor the vibration conditions of components such as the gearbox, main shaft, and motor stator of the wind turbine.

   Tilt sensor

Tilt sensors are mainly used to monitor the angle measurement of wind turbines to ensure they are level.

When constructing offshore wind power generation towers, to prevent the wind turbines at high altitudes from tilting, which could threaten the normal operation and safety of the power generation tower, tilt sensors are needed to monitor the verticality of the wind turbine units over the long term. If tilting exceeds safe values, timely warnings can be issued to notify personnel for inspection and maintenance, thereby ensuring the stability of daily power generation operations.

   Limit switch and current sensor

During the wind power generation process, since the wind strength is constantly changing, it is necessary to adjust the wind turbine blades to maintain a constant rotational speed, ensuring the stability of the power generation process. At this time, limit switch devices can be used, installed at both ends of the range of angle changes of the blades, to protect the internal electronic components from damage by stopping the blade adjustment operation when the blades reach their limit position.

In addition, the complex and variable wind field can also make the voltage generated unstable. To process the generated electrical energy and ensure the generator operates at its best state, current sensors must be used to accurately measure the current of the wind turbine. Generally speaking, current sensors are responsible for measuring the current on both the DC side and the AC side, ensuring the stable and normal operation of the inverter.
