Testing performance and compensation design of tilt sensors in complex motion

The measurement technology of motion posture angle is a part of metrology science. With the continuous development of productivity, angle measurement is professionally applied in various fields such as engineering machinery, industrial control, solar energy, civil engineering, electricity, and aerospace, with the technical level and measurement accuracy continuously improving. The inclination angle of an object under mechanical vibration or motion interference is of great significance in transportation and industrial fields, playing a crucial role in the positioning and tracking of targets. Therefore, developing a dynamic angle measurement system with a digital interface, moderate price, high precision, and a large measurement range has strong practical value. The measurement of tilt angle in a rotating state is a type of dynamic tilt angle measurement with acceleration interference. In a rotating reference frame, an object with mass m is subjected to a pulling force directed towards the center of rotation, but it remains stationary relative to that reference frame, with no acceleration, which does not comply with Newton's first law. Therefore, a reference frame that rotates uniformly relative to an inertial frame is also a non-inertial frame. To maintain the form of Newton's second law in this reference frame, an inertial force Fc* = mω²r should be introduced when the particle is at rest in this reference frame, referred to as centrifugal inertial force, where r represents the vector directed from the axis of rotation to the particle, perpendicular to the axis of rotation. The acceleration affecting the correct output of the measured object's inclination angle in this state is precisely caused by this force. In the context of scarce reference materials available domestically and internationally, this paper boldly proposes five theoretically feasible schemes to offset the errors introduced by centripetal acceleration when measuring the tilt angle in a rotating state based on MEMS accelerometers. The advantages and disadvantages of different schemes in terms of accuracy, hardware and software costs, and implementation complexity are compared. Finally, two theoretically superior schemes are selected for hardware and software design, data acquisition and processing, and experimental results are analyzed to explain the detailed reasons.

Msensor Sensor Technology Co., Ltd. has conducted extensive testing and verification experiments on high-precision dynamic tilt angle sensors in a rotating state using a gyroscope comprehensive experimental turntable. The lower computer microcontroller unit performs digital filtering on the ADC output, and the data is sent to the upper computer for processing via the RS485 bus; the upper computer uses LVRTE2010std to read serial port data and utilizes the built-in MCC compiler in Matlab to compile Matlab script m files and function m files into C/C++ source files for interpolation calculations, with the interpolation results displayed on a Windows visualization application. The experimental results validate the effectiveness and feasibility of the schemes described in this paper.
