What are the precautions to take when using angle sensors (encoders)?

  1. When soldering the terminals of the angle sensor (encoder), avoid using water-soluble flux, as it can promote metal oxidation and material mold; avoid using poor-quality solder, as poor soldering may cause difficulty in tinning, leading to poor contact or disconnection.

  2. If the soldering temperature is too high or the time is too long when soldering the terminals of the angle sensor (encoder), it may damage the potentiometer. For pin-type terminals, soldering should be completed within 3 seconds at 235℃±5℃, and the soldering should be more than 1.5MM away from the potentiometer body; for wire-type terminals, soldering should be completed within 3 seconds at 350℃±10℃. Additionally, the terminals should avoid excessive pressure, as this may lead to poor contact.

  3. The resistive body of the angle sensor (encoder) is mostly made of polycarbonate synthetic resin, and it should avoid contact with the following items: ammonia, other amines, alkaline solutions, aromatic hydrocarbons, ketones, fatty hydrocarbons, and strong chemicals (with high acidity or alkalinity), as these may affect its performance.

  4. During the process of installing the knob on the angle sensor (encoder), the applied force should not be too great (should not exceed the push-pull force parameters specified in the specification), otherwise it may damage the potentiometer.

  5. The rotational operation force (rotation or sliding) of the angle sensor (encoder) will become lighter as the temperature increases and tighter as the temperature decreases. If the potentiometer is to be used in a low-temperature environment, it should be specified so that a special low-temperature grease can be used.

  6. The surface of the angle sensor (encoder) should avoid condensation or the presence of water droplets, and it should not be used in humid places to prevent insulation degradation or short circuits.

  7. When installing a 'rotary' potentiometer, the strength of the fixed nut should not be too tight to avoid damaging the threads or causing poor rotation; when installing a 'metal shell straight slide' potentiometer, avoid using excessively long screws, as this may hinder the movement of the sliding handle or even directly damage the potentiometer itself.

  8. During soldering, the height adjustment of the rosin (flux) entering the printed circuit board should be appropriate, and care should be taken to avoid flux entering the interior of the angle sensor (encoder), as this may cause poor contact between the brush and the resistive body, resulting in INT and poor noise phenomena.

  9. The angle sensor (encoder) is best applied in voltage adjustment structures, and the wiring method should preferably choose to ground pin '1'; avoid using current adjustment structures, as the contact resistance between the resistor and the contact piece is not conducive to the passage of large currents.

  10. The shaft or sliding handle of the angle sensor (encoder) should be designed to be as short as possible. The shorter the shaft or sliding handle, the better the feel and stability. Conversely, the longer it is, the greater the wobble, and the feel is prone to change.

  11. The carbon film of the angle sensor (encoder) can withstand surrounding temperatures of up to 70℃; if the operating temperature exceeds 70℃, it may lose its power.
