The unmanned automated guided vehicle (AGV) accurately loads and unloads containers.

Today (10th), the Yangshan Deep-Water Port Phase IV terminal in Shanghai has officially opened for operation, making it the largest and most automated port area in the world. Unlike traditional manual terminals, the Yangshan Phase IV terminal is a high-tech new terminal where the loading and unloading of containers will be entirely completed by intelligent equipment.

In order to welcome the official opening of the Yangshan Phase IV terminal, final equipment debugging was conducted here a few days ago. When reporters arrived at the Yangshan Phase IV terminal, they saw that on the empty terminal, unmanned automated guided vehicles (AGVs) were shuttling back and forth to transport containers, while bridge cranes and rail cranes were accurately loading and unloading containers.

It is understood that at the Yangshan Phase IV terminal, 100 intelligent devices will be put into production in the initial phase, including 50 automated guided vehicles, 10 bridge cranes, and 40 rail cranes.

According to the plan, the Yangshan Phase IV terminal will ultimately be equipped with 130 automated guided vehicles, 26 bridge cranes, and 120 rail cranes. Equipment that previously required manual operation has now been replaced by intelligent devices, which automatically execute production tasks according to system instructions.

Luo Xunjie, deputy general manager of the Shanghai Port Group's Shangdong branch, stated that the operation of the port is characterized by automated loading and unloading and intelligent production. Automated loading and unloading means that the entire production process is unmanned. Intelligent production means that we provide a lot of data in the background, allowing shipping companies, customers, and relevant port agencies to communicate and coordinate effectively, collecting and organizing all instructions and information into the computer system, which then transforms into operational instructions sent to all on-site operational equipment. The on-site equipment achieves effective, efficient, and safe automated operation without human presence.

It is understood that at the Yangshan Phase IV terminal, both the intelligent equipment on the terminal and the intelligent control system, which acts like a 'brain', are independently developed by Chinese enterprises. After 18 months of intensive debugging, the perfect integration of equipment and systems has finally been achieved here, allowing staff to easily manage the entire terminal operation from the central control tower.

In addition to being intelligent, the Yangshan Phase IV terminal is also a new type of green and environmentally friendly terminal. All equipment at the terminal is powered by electricity, achieving zero emissions, and the moored vessels also use shore power to avoid exhaust pollution generated by diesel engines.

In the future, the Shanghai Port, where Yangshan Port is located, will have an annual throughput exceeding 40 million standard containers, which will be the total throughput of all ports in the United States.

And this is just one of China's hubs connecting to the world. Among the top ten super ports in global throughput, China has already secured seven positions.
